Artist Statement

I wanted to visually/physically communicate perseverance and drive to get to your dreams and goals. I designed this box to be an activity to have to dig through the hardships to get your dream which the yellow box communicates. 

Notes

The movie I picked was Soul Surfer. Soul Surfer is about a true story of a professional surfer who lost her arm due to a shark but she persevered and continued to surf even when it felt impossible. I wanted to convey that messaging of perseverance by digging through the box to get to your ultimate goal. Then when you get to that goal it is colorful, fun, and exciting. The outside of the box was made to look messy because your problem can look messy but you can get through it.

Reflection Statement

The sculptures visually communicate the feeling of Gregor stuck in his room .

While exploring the materials to build the sculptures, I wanted to focus on feelings of Gregor's loneliness and boredom being stuck in his room because it explains the emotions in the story.

I decided to include the muted browns, yellows, and grays throughout the story.

I felt the work was lacking  structure so I added the wall to give the audience more of the feeling being in the room.

I want to keep exploring making art with limited resources.

I want to learn more about how to represent a story with art.

This piece allowed me to explore problem solving and using limited resources.

The making of this work exposed new ideas such as taking my interpretation of a story and putting in something that I am creating.

Reflection Statement

The three sculptures visually communicate whimsy and shooting for your dreams .

While exploring the materials to build the sculptures, I wanted to focus on the whimsy but structure because I wanted something that was structural but fun and whimsical.

I decided to include the lack of color except in the raindrops.

I felt the work was lacking (or you can say “was not producing the results I wanted”) more innovation then I wanted so I tried to think more of what I wanted to communicate.

I want to keep exploring thinking outside the box.

I want to learn more about how to represent my feelings in art/sculptures.

This piece allowed me to explore the exercise of innovation.

The making of this work exposed new ideas such as finding new ways to express myself.

Avery Singer

Avery Singer described the feeling of art as the feeling of freedom. She says she feels "incredibly free" when she has a new art idea. 

She says she liked to keep things more vague and explore more with the technique "because the technique tells its own story".
